Vertigo, Dizzy, Dizziness, Spinning, Menieres DiseaseMeniere’s disease is a condition of the inner ear that causes episodes of vertigo, loss of hearing, tinnitus (ringing in the ear), and at times, a sensation of fullness or pressure in the ear.  Each of these symptoms can be nagging  – recurring vertigo episodes create a spinning sensation that may start and stop suddenly, hearing loss may come and go, and there may be a ringing or buzzing sound in your ear.

Although the exact cause of Meniere’s is not fully understood, a popular theory is that there appears to be an abnormal amount of fluid in the inner ear that contributes to the episodes.  An excess of fluid can happen for many reasons, including improper drainage, allergies, abnormal immune response, head trauma, or migraines.  Unfortunately, most treatment options for Meniere’s disease focus on symptomatic relief rather than getting at what may be actually causing the issue.

How is my neck related to Meniere’s disease?

The reasons for excess inner ear fluid have one thing in common, and it’s something that upper cervical chiropractor Dr. Terry Crowder understands very well.  The key may lie in a misalignment of the uppermost vertebrae in the neck – the atlas and axis bones.  This misalignment may have been initially caused by a head trauma, even one that seemed minor at the time.  Over time, messages sent between the brain and the body responsible for sensing the body’s position become distorted due to the pressure that the misalignment is putting on the spinal cord.

Meniere’s patients who seek out Dr. Crowder’s expertise are able to get to the underlying cause of their condition rather than simply addressing the symptoms.  Dr. Crowder’s solution, realigning those vertebrae to take pressure off of the spinal cord to restore normal brain-body communication, has provided relief to many.  In a study of 60 patients with chronic vertigo, 48 experienced a complete remission of their symptoms after finishing with their course of upper cervical chiropractic care.
